Celebrities Get Acne Too

Celebrities Get Acne Too

It doesn’t matter how rich and famous you are – anyone can get acne. Money can’t buy you happiness and it certainly can’t buy you clear skin. That’s just the way it is.

Around 85% of people will suffer from acne at some point during their lives, and behind the veneer of perfection and airbrushing, celebrities are just like the rest of us – spots and all.

Numerous celebrities have opened up and talked about their skin problems from Cameron Diaz to Katy Perry – so if you’ve ever had breakout despair, you’re not alone. Here are some household names who’ve struggled with pimples.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry is one of the world’s most famous pop singers, and yet still suffers from pimple-related insecurities. Despite being the face of the US skin care brand, Proactiv, the star has talked about her problems with breakouts on several occasions. She told Vogue Magazine, “My skin used to be a lot worse than it is… so we would do a lot of coverage ’cause I was insecure about my skin.”

Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz has had one of the most well-known celebrity struggles with acne. Not one to sugar-coat, the actress has been consistently open about her ‘terrible’ skin, and the difficulties she’s experienced dealing with the acne in the public eye.

In her new book she says, “I mean, I had terrible, terrible, skin. It was embarrassing, and I did everything I could think of to make it go away. I tried to cover it with makeup. I tried to get rid of it with medication: oral, topical, even the harshest prescriptions. Nothing helped for very long.”

It wasn’t until her mid-thirties that she finally beat the blemishes, proving that even the most beautiful women in the world can suffer from adult acne.

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek is roundly acknowledged as one of tinsel town’s most beautiful women. However, in candid interviews she has discussed her battle with acne and the emotional trauma that the condition caused her. She told Lucky magazine’s Jean Godfrey-June, “You want to talk about bad skin? I had acne. And this acne was so bad it sent me into severe, severe depression. Like I couldn’t leave the house.” The psychological trauma of acne is something that many sufferers can relate too but which is largely under-documented, so Salma’s honesty is hugely refreshing.

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt has long been one of the most desirable actors in Hollywood. He’s been drooled over in blockbusters from Thelma and Louise to Mr and Mrs Smith and Troy, and has been voted ‘sexiest man alive’ on countless occasions – and yet small scars on the actor’s cheeks reveal that as a teenager he suffered from acne. Acne scarring is a common problem, and certainly not something that’s got in the way of Brad’s success.

Emma Stone

Current Hollywood darling, Emma Stone is no stranger to the odd pimple. According to the gorgeous actress, her flawless ivory skin has not always been so perfect. In an interview with Refinery 29, the current face of Revlon explained her interest in skincare as stemming from having, “hormonal acne when I was 17” and consequently being put on Accutane, which has since made her skin, mouth, lips and eyes dry.  Dealing with the side effects of medication can be tricky, so it’s great that celebrities like Emma are speaking out about their experiences.

If you’re suffering from acne, you certainly aren’t alone. From adult onset, to the psychological aftermath and scarring, acne is an incredibly common condition that affects a huge variety of people – in fact it would probably be more unusual if you hadn’t experienced it!
